3D print cost calculator

Filament is only part of the cost. Add power, wear on the printer and the odd failed print, and see what to charge if you sell it.

Good to know

How much does a 3D print cost?

For a small PLA print, usually a couple of dollars or less. Filament is the biggest part. Power is often just cents.

Here's the calculator's default example: 50 g of PLA from a $20, 1 kg spool is $1.00. Three hours at 120 W, with power at $0.17 per kWh, is about $0.06. Wear at $0.10 an hour adds $0.30, and 10% for failed prints adds about $0.14. That's roughly $1.50 in total.

Pricing prints you sell

  • Start from the real cost, then add your time. Removing supports, sanding and packing often take longer than you'd guess.
  • The markup covers your printer's price, the prints that went wrong, and your profit. 100% (double the cost) is a common place to start.
  • Long prints tie up the printer. A 20-hour print that costs $4 in plastic still stops you printing anything else for a day.

How it works

  1. 1Type the weight and print time from your slicer, or drop an STL for a rough guess.
  2. 2Put in your filament price and electricity rate.
  3. 3Read the total, and the price with your markup.

Questions people ask

Checked October 2026

Where do I find the weight and time?
Your slicer shows both after you slice. In Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer and Cura it's in the summary next to the slice button. That's more accurate than our STL estimate.
How much power does a 3D printer use?
Most desktop printers average 100–150 W while printing with a heated bed. Enclosed printers with a hot bed for ABS can run closer to 200–300 W.
How is the weight estimated from an STL?
We take the solid volume, then assume walls and top and bottom layers stay solid while the inside follows your infill. It's a ballpark, often within 20%.
